Antifouling Applications

 Biofoulants

-. Biofoulants as biofouling Organism are attaching and growing on the surfaces of man-made structures such as

ships, processing equipment and causing hygienic, functional problems as being economically or environmentally

       undesirable.

-. Biofoulants consist of both microscopic organisms as bacteria, virus, other micro-organisms and macroscopic

organisms as algae, barnacles, seaweeds, other macro-organisms. Normally Macro-biofoulants make serious

       problems to us.

 Major damage types by biofoulants

-. AF painting cost is USD 10 by 1㎡, total annual cost for 300Kton ship is USD 0.35 million(painting and cleaning),

biofoulants increase the fuel cost by 40% and further cause serious environmental problems as emission of CO2,

propagation of extrinsic organisms, maintenance cost increase.

-. In aquaculture, biofoulants attach on net’s surface and block current flow and cause water pollution,

eutrophication, increase of aquatic organism’s disease and mortality rate and antibiotics overuse.

      (account for total cost’s 40%)

Commercial ships

Assuming ships’ fuel consumption is 100 tons (by 1day, 20-knot speed), additional fuel need is 10 tons due to biofoulants,

it cost USD 4,500 by day, USD 135,000 by month, USD 1.62 million based on USD 450 per ton.(FANTHOM FOCUS 2013)

Container carriers

In case of 5,000 TUE container carrier, An additional fuel cost, USD 12 million per year, 9% of total fuel coat are spent due to

biofoulants based on 150 ton by day.(FANTHOM FOCUS 2013)

Maintenance cost

Ships are lifted on land every 3 years for painting and cleaning off biofoulants, these maintenance cost is very big and if these

operating is delayed, engine’s overheating or stopping happens and cause huge post-management costs.

Pollution increase in marine environment

Biofoulants cause 10% of ship’s total fuel consumption(annually USD 30 billion) and additional 0.3% increase of carbon emission

with GHG made by human.(Bellona and the Clean Shipping Coalition)

Antifouling market’s needs

   -. Ships/Submerged structures

Decrease of energy consumption, CO2 emission, propagation of exotic species, VOC, and micro-plastic

      pollution

⇒ 1. Development of eco-friendly AF coating as alternative binders to petrochemical AF paints

          2. Development of Natural product antifoulants(NPAs) as alternative biocides to Cu, Zn organic compound

    -. Fishery / Aquaculture market

Eco-friendly, safe, sustainable Aquaculture environment and ecosystem protection with economy and

       productivity

⇒ 1. Development of eco-friendly AF coatings with NPAs suitable for aquaculture industry

           2. Development of eco-friendly bio-polymer such as cage nets, ropes, and buoys, other application
